I GOT A PROMOTION!!

Mon Feb 16, 2009, 8:46 PM
Wow, you know it's been a while since you've been on here when you look at how many deviations you have to slog through and the number's 814!!! How I'm ever going to be able to look at all of those I have no clue but I do try and look at everything instead of just pressing, "delete all". I always feel I'm going to miss out on some awesome artwork if I do that. So, I think I'll try and clean out 100 a night and see if I can accomplish that goal.

The reason I haven't been on here or submitting any new artwork is, (drum roll please).......

I GOT A PROMOTION!!!

I was just a designer for the company I work for but now I am officially an ASSISTANT DESIGN MANAGER! GO ME!

The only bad news about it was that the ax came down in our little design studio and 10 people got let go. However, I guess it had to be done to keep costs down, production fresh and thriving, and to put our business in a whole new structure and direction. I think it's a good thing creatively and I hope I'm up to the task.

So, if I haven't commented back to you on anything I apologize and I'll be sure and comment when I get down to your deviation which is probably around 550 or so.

I'm going to upload an image of your "Dogs at War" image, but coloured in. Please if you object message me and I'll remove it.

I'll make sure I give you credit for the original image. :)

No problem Lewis. Thanks for linking back to my original piece.

With a mouse you didn't do a half bad job. I don't use a tablet at all in any of my work so don't feel like you HAVE to use one to do good work. If you'd like a little constructive criticism, I'd push my values farther and use more variations in value, more lights specifically. Hope it helps! :D
:iconlewismead:
Thanks for the reply, and thanks for the criticism. But by "more variations" do you mean more colour or a bigger difference from one colour to the shading?
:iconhobbit1978:
Maybe a little bit of both. Right now the coloring gets flat and doesn't show a lot of form or lighting. When you start to add a light source the colors will begin to change from a flat brown to many shades of brown depending on the amount of light or the angle of the lighting itself. There should at least be 3 shades of brown on the fur, a dark for the shadows, a mid-tone for where the light falls all over (you've mostly got that now), and a lighter shade for where the light hits the closest to the surface. Depending on how much you feel like modeling the colors there could be numerous other shades in-between each of those values but there should at least be 3 to start with.

Hope that helps a bit. It's a hard concept to type into words but in general the main point is, "Don't stop now! Keep pushing the values, darker darks, lighter lights!"

:D
:iconlewismead:
Indeed, I understand.
I did plan on doing this, but when I started colouring I kind of lost all concept of lighting and it mainly went to midtones.
:iconlewismead:
Here is the link to the image by the way.:P
